Those who speak nostalgically of Maximiliano Hernández Martínez overlook the fact that he persecuted the most important businessmen, politicians and professionals on the Left and Right, and military personnel. A list of enemies dated 1943, found in the U.S. National Archives, lists 80 Salvadorans designated as “political enemies” by the dictator.
