Pedagogy of the Rifle

In El Salvador, war has been imagined and practiced in the schools. Nineteenth-century governments fostered a political culture anchored in authoritarianism, the “revolution” of the caudillos, coups d’état, and wars. Educational curricula would change over the years, but the pedagogy of war was a seed that would grow into terror at gunpoint, states of siege, the suspension of constitutional guarantees, political persecution, arrests, torture, and forced disappearance. Authoritarian governments will always be more invested in guns than education.
