In Honduras, a Friend of Drug Lords Loses His Seat in Congress

Congressman Óscar Nájera admits that Honduras is a narcostate. He knows it because he has spent three decades representing a prominent province along the cocaine corridor. He knows it because he is and has been, in his own words, a friend of the principal capos in the department of Colón. His name may have made all the lists of U.S. sanctions for ties to drug trafficking and corruption, but Nájera, master of survival, is one of the only people to be sanctioned and not be in a U.S. prison. But his political career reached its end with his defeat last month. The septuagenarian Cacique of Colón has lost his immunity.
