In 2022 the Guatemalan Army decorated Congressman José Ubico, president of the National Defense Committee (2018-2023), with the White Monk Medal First Class, a civilian service distinction. Ubico had been accused in the United States a year earlier of conspiring to traffic cocaine and heroin. It was not until 2024, under the Bernardo Arévalo administration, that the Armed Forces stripped Ubico of the decoration after he pleaded guilty to conspiring to traffic cocaine from 2015 to 2021, the years he served in Congress.
