US Tries Not to Offend Bukele in Annual Human Rights Report
<p>Despite denouncing arbitrary detentions, torture, and the lack of civil rights and due process under El Salvador’s state of exception, U.S. officials admit that the State Department softened criticism of corruption, a sensitive subject for Nayib Bukele. Former IACHR President Julissa Mantilla also confirms that the commission held a failed vote last year to list El Salvador under Chapter 4B, a designation for years reserved for Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, and as of last year, Guatemala.</p>
